The season of heat and rain-drenched earth, Shravan is the holiest month of the year for Hindus. Each day of the week has a special significance, for example, the Monday of this month, known as Shravan Somvar, is a special day in Shiva temples where the idol is bathed day and night and the nanda deep, a 24-hour lamp, burns steadily in the temples signifying the eternal prayers of devotees ascending to heaven. On Tuesdays, Gauri, a form of the Goddess is worshipped in every home, especially by newly married women. Wednesdays are dedicated to Vithala, a form of Vishnu or Krishna and Sundays are dedicated to Surya, the sun god. Trinayan Collective is performing several times during this month presenting choreography that celebrates these divine forms of Shiva, Surya, Krishna and the Devi.

The month of Shravan is also associated with the swing or the jhoola. Deities are portrayed sitting on decorated swings during rituals of worship. This ‘jhoola’ is also depicted in moksha, the final item in the Odissi repertoire, the to and fro movement symbolizes a state of joy and a flight away from the mundane worries of the world.

Shravan 2007 will present vibrant, traditional productions in Odissi dance with live musical accompaniment. All dance choreography is by Durga Charan Ranbir who will also provide vocal accompaniment with the musicians. Guest Artist, Rahul Acharya from Bhubaneshwar, Orissa will be performing with the Collective on certain nights.
