The Company

Trinayan or the third eye- is the nexus of divine energy of each human being. Founded as a Dance Theater officially in 2008, the company has been presenting performances, workshops and dance classes in the ancient style of Odissi dance as a collective for over 10 years in New York City, and was incorportated as a not-for-profit organization in 2004. Today, the company has evolved into three core activities: A Performance Ensemble, Professional Training Program, and our Collaborations/Outreach efforts.
Trinayan's work is steeped in the ancient grace of Odissi dance, dating back 2000 years. Through it's evocative interpretations of classical themes and the guiding principle of "infinite expression and nothing to prove", Trinayans performances have been described as "to understand the spiritual greeting Namaste (I bow to the god within you)" by Dance Magazine and as having a technical power, passion and devotion" by the Village Voice. Most recently, the Dance Theater garnered critical acclaim for their latest production "Swaha: Rituals of Union" which premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival 2010 (FringeNYC) at Dixon Theater. Noted by Alastair Macaulay of The New York Times as "transcending the personal" and "heartening to find something as beautiful, serious and substantial as Swaha: Rituals of Union", Trinayan broke new ground as the first South Asian Dance Company to present a full production at the FringeNYC Festival and to win an "Overall Excellence in Dance" FringeNYC award.
Trinayan's Odissi dance style hails from the Guru Deba Prasad Das Gharana (tradition) and is characterized by its captivating- spontaneity, minimalist grace and vivid expressions combined with grounded, bold and stylized movements; it firmly stands as a style with a unique flavor. Trinayan's performances aim to explore tradition and ancient mythology with contemporary themes and staging, thereby, creating a pulsating connection between dancer and the audience. In 2010, Trinayan became the first Odissi Dance Company in NYC to launch a professional training program.
"To perform and celebrate Odissi- invoking the imagination, exploring the sacred, and dancing through the primordial rhythms of nature and humanity."
